Project details

Works for enlargement of the port complex at Gaeta included the creation of a depositing basin. This type of installation involved not only the need to ensure protection against wave motion and currents for the inner banks (fashioned from quarried material) which perform the function of confinement, but also to speed up the process of consolidating the material used as filler. For protection of the banks, Geosintex recommended the use of SINTEXMATTRESS textile moulds: these are 13 cm thick and provided with equispaced filtration points designed to reduce the hydraulic underthrust generated by wave motion. Geosintex engineers carried out the verifications needed to establish the stability of the mattresses when exposed both to wave and to longitudinal current forces, so as to ensure the effectiveness of the solution.
The issue of expediting consolidation was resolved with the use of a SINTEXDRAIN GNG5 type drainage geocomposite, placing one layer on the bottom and adding further layers of material on top, about 4 m apart (deposition height varies between 6 and 11 m); water is captured and conveyed by the geocomposite toward suitably placed drainage pipelines. The product has a structure such as will guarantee optimum levels of hydraulic performance even under appreciably heavy loads.
