Covering ski slopes with snow artificially requires huge quantities of water, which is why many ski resorts now have man-made lakes serving as collection and storage basins. One such basin was created at Prati di Croda Rossa, in the municipality of Sesto, near Bolzano. Here, the waterproof geomembrane utilized is protected by a drainage geocomposite, SINTEXDRAIN, placed in contact with the soil. Since the floor of the basin is covered with coarse granular material, to the end of ensuring that the structure blends in with the surrounding landscape, minimizing its visual impact, the geomembrane is protected on the top side by a heavy non-woven geotextile, GEODREN, in order to cushion and negate any compressive stresses that might be created, especially during the installation procedure.
