Mamaia beach, one of the most popular seaside resorts in Romania, was being affected by strong forces of erosion that periodic sand nourishment operations had not been able to mitigate. The decision was therefore taken to install groynes at right angles to the coastline, approximately 85 m in length and spaced apart at a distance of 200 m one from the next. The recommendation of Geosintex was to use SINTEXTUBE textile filters for the core of these structures, so as to avoid moving large amounts of aggregates around, instead using locally available sand as the filling material. With the groynes in place, the beach was extended some 50 m toward the sea by bringing in more sand. The SINTEXTUBE structures were covered with sand along the part embedded in the beach, and with stones along the part exposed to the sea. Geosintex worked in collaboration both with the appointed design firm on finalizing the details of the project, and with the contractors, providing support during the installation procedure.
